WOMEN SAFE

FROM SEXUAL VIOLENCE

October is the month of awareness for promoting campaigns against sexual violence towards women of all ages.

Millions of women and girls around the world suffer this type of violence within family environment or they are also targets of other members of society.

Organisations like COLD COAST CENTRE AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE (GCCASV), assists women with therapy, education and to get prepared to face the abusers in the Court of Law, so they can feel supported, safe and receive a fair treatment to get free from oppression, fear, abandonment and isolation resulting from traumas of sexual violence.

"Candle Light Cerimony"

In the first week of October the centre held the "Candle Light Cerimony", for people to light a white candle for those women who were victims and whom didn't survived the abuses.

I lighted a candle in honor to a survivor I met in the centre when I was receiving support.

She had a personal story very similar to mine and we developed a close friendship. Unfortunately, I got to know in the recent years that her pain and family abandonment resulted in her not enduring the suffering anymore and sadly she end up departing from this life.

In this event, we also had the privilege to hear the talks of some of the women who were victims of sexual violence.

They told their stories of suffering and the victories achieved with the help of the centre, like I did in times in the past. Their examples were very moving, bringing tears to the guests present to the event.

At the opportunity, the COLD COAST CENTRE AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE launched the campaign:

"ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IS MENS BUSINESS"

The campaign has as a front leader Gold Coast Police Commissioner Paul Wilson, who aims to educate the male population for the prevention of sexual violence against women.

According to the Police Commissioner, it is the responsibility and consciousness of men to act within their communities to get respect and to protect women from sexual violence.

During the event the Police Commissioner also told about his experience in dealing with various circumstances and ages which women are targets of sexual attacks and he brought attention to the public about his job in the protection of victims of child sexual abuse and his contribution for the conviction of pedophiles.
